kabane

姓(かばね)

A title awarded to a noble family by the court, denoting the family’s status. From the 6th to the 8th centuries, they were often used in place of surnames. Famous kabane include ‘Fujiwara’, ‘Tachibana’, ‘Taira’ and ‘Minamoto’.
