Kyōto shoshidai

京都所司代(きょうとしょしだい)
A role originally established by Oda Nobunaga in 1568, which was adopted by the Tokugawa shōgunate. Selected from the shōgunate’s most loyal retainers, the shoshidai was tasked with policing the capital and maintaining a good relationship between the shōgunate and the court.
