Ritsuryō

律令(りつりょう)

A system of law and order adopted by the court in the early 8th century. Originally based on the system established by Tang China at the time, Japan adapted the rules and hierarchy of noble ranks to fit its style of rule. The original Ritsuryō system was named the ‘Taihō Ritsuryō’ after the name of the era in which it was established.
